Meanwhile, your git repos still live behind a web UI and a rate-limited API where a vendor makes the decisions for you.

This worked well for a long time, but this has now stopped. A single developer with the right toolchain can now do the work of what used to require a team. Coding agents are getting better at contributing autonomously every month, and well established primitives, like pull requests, are breaking down. The processes built for human-paced development are being outgrown.

Every engineering team is now left with a choice: keep fighting an increasingly misaligned stack, or rebuild it from first principles for a new way of working. What we believe this future looks like

Code will become the epicenter of every company. In contrast to agentic workflows, it is cheap to run, reliable and repeatable. Custom builds are no longer the enemy when applications can be created within minutes. In turn, the mission of engineering teams shifts to building and evolving the guardrails that keep the software coding agents produce reliable and secure.

What those teams need are reliable and versatile infrastructure primitives: headless components that follow the Unix philosophy, each doing one thing well, composable and extensible through code rather than configuration screens.

Code hosting as infrastructure

Enroute is an open-source, fully programmable git infrastructure to make code hosting something you customize and integrate just like any other part of your stack.

You build your own surfaces and logic on top of these primitives, with exactly the workflows and integrations you need. Your application integrates against a gRPC API and implements hooks for authentication, permissions, visibility rules and push notifications.

Under the hood, Enroute is git infrastructure rebuilt from the ground up on object storage. That gives it the scale that agentic coding actually requires, and it makes it far more reliable and cheaper to operate than a fleet of stateful git servers.

Building in the open

Enroute is 100% open source under a permissive license. Host it yourself for free, no questions asked. We believe that teams shouldn’t have to build core parts of their stack on closed-source software – we know we wouldn’t.

Down the line, we plan to make money by hosting Enroute for individuals and teams who prefer the convenience of having it run by the people who know it best. There will only ever be one version of Enroute, no enterprise edition, no features held back.
